WORKING IN CLIENTS' BEST INTEREST AT ALL TIMES

DOUG BELLFY, MBA, CFP®

I believe that financial planning is a positive, powerful tool for changing lives and that it should be accessible to everyone regardless of net worth or investment amounts.

I’ve always had a passion for financial planning for as far back as I can remember. I received my bachelor’s degree in engineering and started down that career track. But I continued to move toward the business world by earning a masters degree in management & finance while working during the day. After receiving my MBA, I started managing business divisions in large companies, but still could not stop the financial planning field from calling to me.

After more than 20 years of corporate leadership positions, I decided to take my career in a different direction to fulfill my passion fully. I returned to college again to complete the educational requirements, passed the CFP® examination and fulfilled the required years of relevant experience. Now, as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional, I’m able to bring high quality and affordable financial advice to everyone the way I always wanted; with no minimum asset requirements, no commissions and no product sales of any kind.

In addition to running my planning practice, I am an adjunct professor at Central Connecticut State University, teaching courses in Personal Finance, Insurance and Personal Financial Planning.

My wife and I have lived in New England almost all our lives and enjoy taking advantage of everything the region has to offer. I’m also an active member of the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA), The FeeOnly Network, and the Past Treasurer and Director of the Meriden/Wallingford United Way.

Doug's Professional Designations

The CFP® certification is a voluntary certification; no federal or state law or regulation requires financial planners to hold CFP® certification. It is recognized in the United States and a number of other countries for its (1) high standard of professional education; (2) stringent code of conduct and standards of practice; and (3) ethical requirements that govern professional engagements with clients.

To attain the right to use the CFP® marks, an individual must satisfactorily fulfill the following requirements:

Education – Complete an advanced college-level course of study addressing the financial planning subject areas that CFP Board’s studies have determined as necessary for the competent and professional delivery of financial planning services, and attain a Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited United States college or university (or its equivalent from a foreign university). CFP Board’s financial planning subject areas include insurance planning and risk management, employee benefits planning, investment planning, income tax planning, retirement planning, and estate planning;

Examination – Pass the comprehensive CFP® Certification Examination. The examination includes case studies and client scenarios designed to test one’s ability to correctly diagnose financial planning issues and apply one’s knowledge of financial planning to real world circumstance

Experience – Complete at least three years of full-time financial planning-related experience (or the equivalent, measured as 2,000 hours per year); and

Ethics – Agree to be bound by CFP Board’s Standards of Professional Conduct, a set of documents outlining the ethical and practice standards for CFP® professionals.

Individuals who become certified must complete the following ongoing education and ethics requirements in order to maintain the right to continue to use the CFP® marks:

Continuing Education – Complete 30 hours of continuing education hours every two years, including two hours on the Code of Ethics and other parts of the Standards of Professional Conduct, to maintain competence and keep up with  developments in the financial planning field; and

Ethics – Renew an agreement to be bound by the Standards of Professional Conduct. The Standards prominently require that CFP® professionals provide financial planning services at a fiduciary standard of care. This means CFP® professionals must provide financial planning services in the best interests of their clients.

Operations Manager

With Synergy Financial Planning growing beyond the point where it could be managed by Doug alone, in 2019 Diane decided to leave a nearly 30 year career in leadership roles in Finance, Health Care and Insurance Operations and join the Synergy team as Operations Manager. She immediately put  her customer service, budgeting & forecasting and operations skills from the corporate world into use, streamlining and improving processes to make our client facing processes more efficient and pleasant for our clients. Diane’s contributions to the operations of the practice and support of our clients have allowed us to continue to grow and welcome new clients into the practice each year.

Many clients also take advantage of the broad experience Diane has in how insurance companies work and has helped untangle this confusing area, especially in the area of ACA insurance signups and medical plan analysis.

Diane holds a BS degree in Health Management and Policy from University of New Hampshire and is a Financial Paraplanner Qualified Professional (FPQP®) from the College for Financial Planning.
